Complexity

Complexity refers to the behavior of a system whose many components can interact with each other in a variety of different ways. The system is also characterized by system elements that enter into an exchange with regard to:
  • Energy
  • Information
  • Material
  • If the overall behavior of a system cannot be clearly described despite complete information about its individual components and their interactions, it concerns emergence. The challenge here lies in developing new properties or structures of a system as a result of the interaction of its elements. The emergent properties of the system cannot be reduced to properties of the elements that display them in an isolated manner.
Analyzing complex system represents a major challenge. This also concerns the development of FMEA.
