Single minute exchange of die

Single minute exchange of die, SMED for short, is a method of shortening machine setup times. The aim of this concept is, wherever possible, to perform all work while the machine is running in order to increase the production time. If possible, the employee should not need to leave their workplace when setting up the stopped machine.

SMED also contains the introduction of standardized tools, the replacement of internal tool changes with external ones – while the machine is active, setting up centering clamping devices on the tool carriers, as well as exact parameter setting during the adjustment of the machine in order to avoid any necessary readjustments.
